Are Hedgehogs For You?
Hedgehog parenthood or ownership, depending on how you view your hedgehog is no longer common. Although they are currently classified as exotic pets, hedgehog have become common household pets and you see an increase in commercial hedgehog food available (this are not healthy but I’ll discuss this another time) along with many hedgehog accessories like wheels, bedding, custom beds, toys, etc.
Popularity of Hedgehog Ownership
Since then I’ve seen hedgehog ownership becoming more popular with reposting of Mr. Pokee and Herbee, Azuki the Hedgehog, Pepper the American Hedgehog Ninja Warrior, etc. and many adorable hedgehog photos circulated across social media. However, this also meant an increase in hedgehog rehoming and abandonment. Many people take a quick interest in hedgehogs thinking they are easy to care for but sometimes that’s not always the case. It’s just like having a child, not all children shares the same personality. You’re bound to meet more socialized hedgehogs and also more grumpy ones. That doesn’t mean your hedgehogs HATE you! I can’t emphasize this enough!
Am I Ready for Hedgehogs?
I’ve asked this question more times than I can ever imagine. I’ve always wanted a hedgehog for the longest time, probably as early as 2013. My passion and interest for these adorable and unique critters only started to take a stronger interest beginning end of 2015 and until I adopted my very first hedgehog in late 2017. I made sure I was able to commit to providing quality care and love before getting a hedgehog. It was not a decision I made on the whim.
“My hedgehog hates me!”
Anthropomorphizing emotions like hatred when hedgehogs behave defensively, doesn’t mean that your hedgehogs hate you! In simpler terms, hedgehogs are simply afraid of the unknown, so please never take this personally. With more patience, love, and time, your hedgehog will gradually and subtly change its behaviour towards you – less grumpy and possibly more social.
Must-Ask Questions Before Getting a Hedgehog
Here’s an easy checklist flowchart you can refer to and follow when you’re planning to adopt a hedgehog!
These are the tough questions you really have to ask yourself before getting ready to care for a hedgehog! Parenthood is a lifetime, not temporary.
Congratulations! I’m very excited for you and your hedgehog’s journey! Feel free to share them with us and don’t forget to say hi on social!
